AWS Advanced Networking Specialty - take or wait for ANS-N?

His October booking is now a booking for an exam that will not exist. He is not the only one in this position. The Advanced Networking Specialty has been one of the more respected AWS certs for mid-career network engineers, especially people who already hold SAA-C03 and want to differentiate on the infrastructure side. The retirement notice, published 19 July, gives everyone until 31 August to either sit the current exam or pivot to the replacement. The replacement is called AWS Network Architecting (ANS-N), and it goes GA in Q4 2026. That sounds like plenty of time until you start asking the real questions: does the new exam cover the same material? Does my SAA-C03 still count? Will employers care which version I hold? I have dug through the AWS Training & Certification announcements from the past week, the community threads, and the internal ReadRoost market notes to get a straight answer. What is changing and when

The Advanced Networking Specialty has been around for years as the networking-focused counterpart to the Solutions Architect track. It covers VPC design, hybrid networking, DNS, network security, and cost optimisation at a depth that the SAA-C03 only touches in passing.

On 19 July 2026, AWS published the retirement notice on the Training & Certification site. The existing SCS-ANS exam will accept candidates until 31 August 2026. After that date it is gone.

On 21 July, AWS confirmed the replacement: the AWS Network Architecting (ANS-N) specialty. The new exam syllabus is in development now, and AWS expects it to reach general availability in Q4 2026. That means the earliest anyone could sit ANS-N is probably October or November, assuming no delays.

What this means in practice is that there is a gap. Between 1 September (when SCS-ANS closes) and whenever ANS-N goes live, there will be no active AWS networking specialty exam. Candidates who miss the August deadline but want the cert before Christmas are in a holding pattern.

The four-question decision tree

I have been through enough cert retirements to know that the generic advice ("take it now" or "wait for the new one") is wrong for about half the people reading this. The right answer depends on four questions:

### Question 1: Have you already started studying?

If you have been through even one pass of the SCS-ANS exam guide, have a set of notes, or have sat a practice test, you should take the existing exam. The ANS-N syllabus will be different enough that your current study investment will partially or fully lose relevance. Five weeks is tight but achievable if you have a foundation.

If you have not opened a study guide yet, you are starting from zero. Five weeks is not enough to prepare for a specialty-level exam without burning out. You are better off waiting for ANS-N and studying at a normal pace.

### Question 2: Do you need the cert before February 2027?

Employer grant cycles, contract renewal deadlines, and partner tier requirements do not care about exam retirement dates. If you need an AWS networking cert on your profile before early next year, you should take SCS-ANS now. ANS-N could slip into early 2027, and a "GA in Q4" promise from any cloud provider is worth taking with a month of buffer.

If the cert is for your own development and there is no external deadline, wait for ANS-N and get the newer credential.

### Question 3: Are you holding SAA-C03 within 12 months of renewal?

Here is the detail most advice skips. AWS allows you to renew an Associate-level cert by passing a Professional or Specialty exam. If you hold SAA-C03 and it is approaching its three-year renewal, passing SCS-ANS before 31 August extends your SAA-C03 by another three years. That is one exam doing double duty: you get the networking specialty AND you renew your Solutions Architect at the same time.

If you wait for ANS-N, that renewal path is uncertain until the new exam's recertification rules are published. AWS has confirmed the basic framework (ANS-N counts toward the same recertification pool as SCS-ANS) but the exact credit mappings are still in discussion per the 23 July CLN update.

### Question 4: Do you work primarily with AWS networking or multi-cloud networking?

SCS-ANS is heavily focused on AWS-native networking: VPCs, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, Route 53, CloudFront, Network Firewall. If your day job is AWS networking and you want to validate that expertise, the existing exam does the job perfectly well and employers recognise it.

If your work spans AWS, Azure, and on-prem (which is most network engineers these days), the ANS-N syllabus is expected to broaden toward hybrid and multi-cloud scenarios. Waiting for the new exam may give you a credential that better reflects the actual job.

Cohort 1: Take the existing exam now

You are in this cohort if you answered YES to question 1 or YES to questions 2 AND 3.

This is the group that should register for SCS-ANS this week. Here is the five-week sprint plan:

Week 1 (now): Register for the exam. Book it between 25-30 August to give yourself maximum study time while leaving a safety window before the 31st. Pick up the official SCS-ANS exam guide and the associated AWS networking whitepapers.
Week 2-3: Focus on the four heavy areas: VPC design and peering, Transit Gateway architecture, Direct Connect and VPN options, and Route 53 routing policies. These make up roughly 60% of the exam by my count.
Week 4: Network security (Network ACLs, security groups, AWS Network Firewall, WAF) and cost optimisation. These are the sections where candidates tend to over-study because they are interesting but underweighted.
Week 5: Practice tests and gap filling. Take at least two full-length practice exams, review every wrong answer, and re-read the sections where you scored below 70%.

The community consensus from those who have passed recently is that the exam rewards hands-on experience more than memorisation. If you have built VPCs with transitive routing, configured Direct Connect with BGP, or troubleshot Route 53 resolution, you are further along than you think.

Cohort 2: Wait for ANS-N

You are in this cohort if you answered NO to question 1 AND NO to question 2, OR if you answered YES to question 4.

There is no shame in waiting. The new syllabus will reflect current AWS networking services and best practices. Services like Cloud WAN, VPC Lattice, and the newer Direct Connect features are barely covered in SCS-ANS but are expected to feature in ANS-N. You will end up with a more relevant credential and you will not have to cram.

What you should do between now and Q4 2026:

- Sign up for the ANS-N waitlist on the AWS Training & Certification site so you get notified when the exam guide drops. - Study the networking sections of the SAA-C03 and SAP-C02 guides in the meantime. They cover enough foundational material that you will not be starting from zero when ANS-N lands. - If you need something to study between now and Q4, consider the CCST Routing & Switching track (Cisco's new entry-level cert) or the AWS AI Practitioner (AIF-C01). Both are lower-stakes options that fill the gap without overloading your study calendar.

Cohort 3: The edge case (SAA-C03 renewal)

This is the cohort that should act fastest. If your SAA-C03 is within 12 months of renewal and you have networking experience, you are looking at one exam that does two jobs. Pass SCS-ANS before 31 August and you extend your SAA-C03 plus you add the networking specialty.

The calculation is straightforward: one exam fee, one study period, two outcomes. You will not get that deal from ANS-N because the credit mappings between the new specialty and the Associate renewal are not yet finalised.

What to do this week

If you are in Cohort 1: register for SCS-ANS by Friday. Book your exam slot for the last week of August. Open the exam guide and do one full pass of the VPC and Transit Gateway sections. That alone covers almost a third of the content.

If you are in Cohort 2: clear your calendar. You have a few months before ANS-N drops. Study the SAA-C03 networking units at a relaxed pace and watch for the ANS-N exam guide announcement.

If you are in Cohort 3: make your decision this week. The dual-renewal window closes on 31 August and there is no guarantee the new exam will carry the same recertification weight.

The honest truth is that neither path is a trap. AWS has handled this retirement better than some past ones by giving a clear replacement timeline and publishing the transition rules early. The risk is not that you pick wrong. The risk is that you do not pick at all and wake up in September realising your exam no longer exists.

FAQ

Can I still use my SCS-ANS study materials for ANS-N?

Partially. The core networking concepts (VPC design, hybrid connectivity, DNS) will carry over, but ANS-N is expected to broaden coverage toward Cloud WAN, VPC Lattice, and multi-cloud topologies. Your SCS-ANS notes are a head start, not a full path.

Will employers care which version I hold?

Not in the short term. Both SCS-ANS and ANS-N are AWS networking speciality credentials. Employers care that you understand AWS networking, not which exam version you sat. The one exception is if a job posting specifically lists SCS-ANS by name, which is becoming rarer as the retirement approaches.

What if I fail SCS-ANS in August?
